Vlad lll, better known as Vlad Tepes or Vlad the Impaler, was prince of Wallachia, today southern Romania, between 1456 and 1462. He was a courageous warrior who fought against the Ottoman expansionism that threatened his country and the rest of Europe, but he was also known for his cruel and ruthless way of punishing enemies, traitors and criminals, which would be worth his infamous nickname.
Vlad The Impaler was the character that inspired Irish writer Bram Stoker to create the well-known vampire character Count Dracula. Countless authors have subsequently drunk from their novel, to make all kinds of adaptations, both literary and cinematographic, narrating the adventures of such a bloodthirsty vampire. However, despite the fame of the historical character's cruel impaler, and of the novel's bloodthirsty vampire, Vlad Tepes is currently considered a national hero in Romania.
