Crocodiles are a family of arcosaurian reptiles that currently have 14 different species. These are huge semi-aquatic reptiles that inhabit the tropical regions of Asia, Africa, America and Australia, and it is estimated that they first appeared during the Eocene period, about 55 million years ago.
Crocodiles are usually grouped in freshwater areas, such as rivers, lakes and wetlands. They feed essentially on vertebrate animals (fish, mammals and other reptiles), and sometimes, depending on the species, on invertebrates (molluscs and crustaceans).
One of its 14 species, the marine crocodile, is the largest of the current crocodiles (the largest specimen of which is recorded was 8.5 meters long and 1,700 kilos in weight, and was captured in Queensland, Australia, in the year 1957). It is followed by the Nile crocodile, with specimens that exceed 6 meters and almost 750 kilos in weight.
