Abu Simbel is a famous site of archaeological interest composed of several Egyptian temples located in the region of Nubia, in southern Egypt. It is located on the western shore of Lake Nasser, about 230 km. southwest of Aswan, close to its original location. The temples are part of the Nubia and Aswan Open Air Museum, which was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1979 under the name "Monuments of Nubia, from Abu Simbel to File".
Temples were excavated in the rock during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II in the 13th century BC. C., as a monument dedicated to said Pharaoh and his wife Nefertari, to commemorate his victory in the battle of Qadesh and thus show his power to the Nubians.
In 1968, Abu Simbel was relocated to a nearby artificial hill, to prevent it from being submerged, after the construction of the Aswan Dam, by the reservoir formed by the waters of the Nile River.
