Dokeos is an open source software that free an electronic learning environment developed and maintained. With the Dokeos software, teachers can pass on knowledge to students all over the world can log on to the system to commands to accomplish.

After installation of the Dokeos software on a server room challenges and learning pathways are created and accomplished through the website. In addition, the Course also allows for teachers and students to communicate with each other via, for example, an online calendar, chat and forum.

On January 18, 2010, a portion of the Dokeosgemeenschap decided to make a new open source project to start. That ELO project is called Chamilo and offers more functionality than the free version of Dokeos.

Dokeos has the following characteristics:

• complete courses are easy to create thanks to a template system that allows charts, animations and video-pages can be created
• create and decrease of multiple choice keys, buttons, input fields, hotspots, and buttons with open-questions
• creation of a learning path for the pupil, adding content, tests, and activities
• automatic reporting of claim of students: view of progression in assignments, length of time per module, scores, etc.
• convert PowerPoint presentations to online display and tests, audio, or activities for presentation to add
• interaction between the teacher and the student by calendar, forum, chat, videoconferencing, and command-feedback functions
